Enough is Enough, and So Are You!

The 2020 election is approaching and it is more important than ever for each of us to stand up and do our part to make sure Trump is a one-term president. We need every bit of brilliance, every single voice, and every pair of hands to remove him from office. You may already be thinking, “I don’t have one second of free time – I am busy just trying to survive,” or, “It won’t make a difference anyway so why should I bother?” or even, “I don’t have what it takes to affect any kind of change in my own life, much less the world.” Now as you read this next part, pay close attention because it will change your life:

Your “I can’t” and “I’m not enough” inner dialogues are simply excuses we all sometimes default to in order to make things easier on us and stay in our comfort zone – but they won’t get you where you want to go!

Now that you have this important piece of information, you can travel a couple of different roads. You can remain in your comfort zone, allow yourself to get sucked down the rabbit hole, becoming depressed, hopeless and stuck, believing these negative thoughts. The other choice? Give up your outdated “I’m not enough” conversation and get on with it! And that’s the point, you get to choose.

Somehow, we have come to believe we have no choice, telling ourselves, “It’s just the way it is,” or “This is who I am.” Baloney! These are lies and excuses and enough is enough! It’s time to take off your Negative Nelly hat and don a new one. Why choose to let your negative voice sit in the driver’s seat? It’s way past time to make a conscious decision to let her go. Yes, Negative Nelly and her excuses have served you in the past – perhaps protecting you from something or someone. But, given the huge task in front of us in 2020, she is no longer your most empowering choice. She no longer serves you well…nor anyone else.

We both have a burning desire to make a difference: to support people in their transformational journeys and, especially, to create a positive outcome in the 2020 election. The present administration does not support an empowered electorate so we must collectively take charge of our political destiny. We cannot afford for anyone to sit this one out.

We know transformation is possible and that we can step into individual and collective empowerment. We’ve seen at the Women’s March and other protests, rallies, and through the formation of groups like Indivisible. We personally, and thousands of our clients, have benefited greatly from shifting our beliefs and taking actions in alignment with those new beliefs. Writing our book, Beyond Resistance: Coping with the Stress of the Trump Era, is proof that we can each take charge of our destiny. Neither one of us ever thought or believed we could write a book. We shifted this belief and then, guess what? We wrote a book! “I am not enough” excuses are no longer an option for any of us as we head towards 2020. The stakes are just too high.

You are more than enough. According to astrophysicist, Neil deGrasse Tyson, you are made of stardust. Start acting like it. Recognize that even those who we deem successful, have the same conversations going on in their heads. A favorite example of this is Meryl Streep – the most nominated Academy Award actor in history – who has said, “You think, why would anyone want to see me again in a movie? And, I don’t know how to act anyway, so why am I doing this?” Amazing!

Transformational Action Steps:

Notice – What is your inner voice saying to you? You live most of your life in your head – make sure it’s a nice place to be! Notice how negative thoughts affect your body and how it reacts. Do they make you feel sluggish or heavy? Do you feel disempowered? How does your body react to positive thoughts? Energized? Do you feel inspired and motivated? As we are polluting our Mother Earth with trash, so are we polluting our bodies with negativity. Ask yourself if your negative thoughts are the truth about who you are or are they just little lies you have picked up along your journey? Once you notice, write it all down.

Choose – What do you actually choose for yourself? We would highly suggest self-compassion. We are harder on ourselves than anyone else could ever be, which often leads to stagnation and lost dreams. Recognize your negative self-talk for what it is, a learned response to keep you safe from the unknown that lurks beyond your comfort zone. Affirm your choice to recognize it for what it is and then choose to let it, and the excuses, go.

Act – You know exactly what you need to do to be in alignment with your highest vision of yourself. You know! Get quiet, dip down into your heart, acknowledge your inner strength, and demand the courage to step up to the plate. Anything is possible from there.

We need you – all of you – in order to affect positive change in our political system and our lives. Enough is enough – we cannot afford to continue down the path of environmental destruction, corporate greed, blaming the “other” for our problems, and the erosion of our democratic norms and the rule of law. Your voice matters as we head towards the 2020 election, and we are all counting on you to use it.

You are more than enough.
